Morphology and Anatomy:

  Nematode is 0.64-0.86 mm long.

Body configuration usually rounded at both ends.

Cuticle tends to swell in water and fixative when nematodes are killed.

Curved odontostyle with dorsal groove.

Females: Diovarial.

Males: Caudal alae absent. Single testis.

Economic Importance:

Feeding:

Ectoparasitic; feeds on epidermal cells at and just behind root tips.

Nematodes form colonies and swarm in feeding area.

Feeds in cells by repeated thrusting of the odontostyle within a polysaccharide feeding tube.  Cell contents move along the groove on the dorsal side of the odontostyle.

Potatoes, grass, vines, wheat, and apples.

Life cycle is 45 days on apple.

Damage:

May be involved in Docking Disorder in some cases.

Nematode vectors Pea Early Browning Virus (PEBV) and Tobacco Rattle Virus (TRV).

Management:

Docking disorder can be controlled with 1,3-Dichloropropene (1,3-D); Aldicarb also used.
