Morphology and Anatomy:

 

Nematode is approximately 2.0 to 3.0 mm long.

Distribution:

Occurs in desert regions of southern California, i.e., the Palo Verde, Coachella, and Imperial valleys where the nematode poses special problems on fall vegetables, especially carrots, etc.

Damage:

Root crops; e.g., carrots, especially damaged.  

Devastating to seedling root systems.

Longidorus africanus damage to lettuce seedling.  Imperial Valley, California.

Management:

Nematicides have been successful.  

Timing of planting of fall crops to avoid temperature conditions favorable to the nematode; plant when soil temperatures are below about 16 C.
